Bird-birds like the company of other birds.
People-Birds like the company of humans.

I've run into both and this is where it's important to try to match the right bird to the right family.

Bird-birds would do well in a sanctuary (the next best thing to freedom).

People-Birds would do well being re-homed to a family that will love and appreciate them.

Bird-birds don't require human interaction, and typically need to be adopted paired up with a Bird-Friend.

If you put a People-Bird or a Special Needs Bird in an aviary/sanctuary, the other birds may actually kill them...

I teach you bird things.

Francis talks a little bit and is mild mannered. Hilda is a nipper-butt, but she only wants to protect her Francis. They both act like goofballs, preen each other, snuggle, and are good for a family that may be on the busy side but wants the company of birds.

"I take good care of my bird. It's ok for birds to be pets." If you don't volunteer with bird rescue. You have no say.

I devote my life to it. I devote my finances to it. I work 40 hours a week as a graphic designer, I take my off-days to go to adoption events and the museum to educate. I'm making info graphics. I'm trying to make things to sell to pay for vet bills of birds that aren't even my own.
I'm not trying to be a peacock, but I'm explaining how serious I am about the need to educate to save these babies from heart break.
This is the life I choose to live because of all the uninformed people out there. Bird rescuers exhaust themselves cleaning up the mess of those who think it's "ethical" to keep birds as pets.

Did you know birds can FLY!? Imagine that. Now imagine if you could fly and were sentenced to a life living on house arrest.

Doing rescue for over 5 years, I've learned that the same that applies for dogs and cats should apply to birds. Adopt. Don't shop, with the added, "Support Conservation".

All that money you blow on keeping a parrot would be better blown on efforts to help keep wild animals wild, perhaps support ecotourism.

Parrots are wild animals just as tigers, monkeys, and the like. They were not domesticated over 1000s of years, and truth be told, look how we treat those that were (dogs and cats).

Rescuers get the, "I used to have a bird..." stories.

"Oops, my daughter starved her budgie."

"Oops, it flew out the window."

"Oops, it flew into a bucket of water and drowned."

"Oops, it flew into a pot of boiling water, help. I don't have money to take it to the vet. Oh whatever, it was a 20$ bird anyway."

"Oops, my lover got mad that my macaw bit me and threw it against the wall, breaking their upper beak off"

"Opps, my dog/cat killed my bird."

If you don't actively participate in bird rescue, you don't have enough experience with birds to know what you're talking about when it comes to ethics.

No, don't set companion birds free. Just don't buy them from breeders anymore.
The act of breeding birds is cruel. Yes, there are bird mills. Yes, you break the heart of the parents when you take their baby away, causing them to want to produce more in an endless cycle of cruelty.

No matter how well we treat them in our homes, it could never compare to a life in the wild with their families.

I used cues, repetition, and reward.

My lovebirds get to fly around in the bird room in the morning and evening. In order to return them to their cages, I originally used a butterfly net to catch them, and set them gently back into their cages.

Before taking out the net, I would clap my hand 3 times as a warning/indicator that the net was coming. They eventually learned that the net wasn't something to be feared and it only came out when it was cage time. Now, Runty & Squirmy wait for me to hold the net out to them, so they can hitch a ride on the rim, and hop into their cage.

They picked this up pretty quick and I thought maybe the foster lovebirds could learn, and they did.

Bonnie & Clyde no longer need me to reach for the net, I just have to do the claps. Jack & Elsa hear the claps, see the net, and they fly to the top of their cage, and stare at me. Then I slowly bring the net closer to them, they take the hint, and crawl into their cage.

After getting in their cages, I tell them what a good job they did, and pop some millet in their cage (reward).

There's probably better ways to teach them how to do this. Instead of using a net, hold a long perch to them, try to get them to step up on it using a treat, and put them in the cage. Maybe have millet already waiting for them in the cage.

The foster lovebirds are often very anti-hands, so the net seemed to be the optimum choice at the time.

I am not a behavioralist or anything like that and I'm open to correction and suggestions.

My Uncle in NY loves budgies. He told me he didn’t like how they were being cared for at a local Petco. He had two that came to him sick, thus returning them for 2 different budgies. One of the new budgies showed the same symptoms (weird poop). So what? Return her for another one?

They’re not moldy bread you switch out for a new loaf, they’re bird-friends. Why don’t they fix up the two and give them back? This was within the 30 days of which you can return them.

This didn’t sit well with me, so I contacted customer service, who got me in touch with the local General Manager, and I politely told him what was happening.
I was not out to get anyone fired, just there to make sure the budgies are being well cared for, and if it possible, that he could return the new sick budgie when she was better. They said yes.

He went to the Petco and they were very nice to him. They could tell that it washis niece that called up to inquire. He feels better knowing they’re being looked after.
He’s still curious about the sick budgie cage they have in the back, so I told him to be nice, and ask if they wouldn’t mind showing them to him.
He doesn’t have to be ALL up in their business, but since he gives them his business, it’s fair that he feels comfortable supporting them. In order to feel comfortable, he needs to make sure the bird-friends are being cared for…

We have so many options when it comes to buying, companies know they need to earn our patronage.

Moral of the story, consumers have power through social media, reviews, word of mouth, and of course, their money. If you don’t like the way an animal is being treated or looks, politely inquire. Show that you care, inspire them to care, and if they don’t, get squawking on their facebook page, yelp, google reviews, contact corporate, share the information, but do so RESPONSIBLY. Keep your ego out of it and keep it about the animals

In Australia it's not that bad, but you constantly here about over run shelters and abandoned birds from america in aus our shelters are not over run (with birds) you ether have the old people who think tiny cages are okay or the newer generation that are actively involved in their parrots lives. Americans like to claim that which is unique and exotic as their own, typically on impulse. They realize they’re in over their head, and discard whatever they find inconvenient. They don’t register that the animal that they chose to take responsibility for, is a living, breathing, feeling being, akin to a child, so, “Meh, dump “it” off somewhere. Make “it” someone else’s problem.”
Francis talks a little bit and is mild mannered. Hilda is a nipper-butt, but she only wants to protect her Francis. They both act like goofballs, preen each other, snuggle, and are good for a family that may be on the busy side but wants the company of birds.

Richard was very loved and spoiled until his dad could no longer care for him. He says "Hey Richard" whistles, dances, sits on your shoulder and is a very good bird. If you have a few hours a to spend with a bird daily, and want a to interact with, Richard would be happy to be your friend.

I made this in hopes that people will wake up to the huge responsibility that is sharing your life with a parrot. It’s possible they will outlive you. What are your plans if/when they do?

We have people seeking out our rescue because a family member passed away and they are not prepared to take over the care of their bird.

In the absence of flockmates and actual mates (which they would have in the wild), birds often proceed to form strong emotional bonds with a particular person. Upon their passing, they may actually become vicious or neurotic, even resorting to self-mutilation/plucking. They suffer heart break just as we do.

This is why I cringe at photos of people with baby macaw, cockatoos, and amazons that are destined to be pets.

“PETCO’s in MA that I’ve been in aren’t much better. I saw a conure for half off last week and wondered why…he was over a year old, in a cage with no toys, no nothing…when I whistled at him he screamed and screamed and screamed…sounded like a bird that was brought back because he was loud and now he’s “old”…poor things…I dislike PETCO!!!” - MW
“The same thing has happened in a Texas Petco. I hate that the pet stores do this to their birds. The bird was a blue quaker. Water dirty….One toy hung up so high he could not reach it.I have complained so many times to the managers and head office. It falls on deaf ears. The bird was there for months and months. I do not go in to petco or Petsmart anymore. I order all my bird toys and food online.” - BB
"I saw a quaker parrot in the Boca Raton Petco that was there for a very long time. I would go there to have him chase my fingers, play peek-a-boo in order to give him some attention. I knew he needed socialization just as my parrots at home did. I asked an employee about him and was told that he's been bounced around different Petcos for 2 years. I couldn't go to Petco after that. Every time I thought about Petco and Quaker Oats (my nickname for him) I would just cry. I still want to cry because they're still doing this. The demand needs to stop or they're just going to keep doing it. Corporations don't care. We shouldn't have to pay ransom to save animals from pet stores" - JB
Please consider an immediate end to the sale of birds in your stores.
As I’m sure you are aware, prior to 1992 it was legal and common practice for humans to remove many species of parrots from the wild to be sold as pets. Parrots are native to Africa, Australia, Continental Asia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, and Southwest Pacific. There is no species native to the US. The US native Carolina Parakeet was hunted to extinction by 1939.

Post 1992, parrots sold as pets in the US are from breeding mills and private breeders. Parrots can live from 15 to nearly 100 years depending on the species. In the wild, parrots are monogamous and become inseparable from their mate for their life. In the wild they live in flocks, are very social, communicative and territorial. They fly many miles a day in the wild. Parrots are not domesticated pets like dogs and cats. They are wild animals. Parrots DO NOT make good pets! Simply stated, they belong in the wild, NOT in cages in our homes. The pet industry has threatened the parrot population, and birds being kept as pets cannot be returned to the wild.

Please continue your humane efforts by discontinuing the sale of birds in your stores. Your leadership in providing a venue for dog and cat rescue and adoption has made a difference for so many homeless pets. Please broaden that circle to include birds by supporting bird rescue and adoption events. You have a unique opportunity to show communities nationwide the importance of adopting a bird instead of buying one. And with that effort, thousands of unwanted birds can find their own safe and happy new beginning.

As animal lovers, compassionate citizens, and caretakers of this beautiful planet, we have a responsibility to do no harm and to be the voice for the voiceless. Birds belong in the wild, not in cages or breeding facilities.

Let’s come together as a community, and as a culture to allow these beautiful, highly intelligent creatures their rightful place in the wild, where they can live as nature intended, and not for our profit or personal enjoyment.

Petco is creating a compassionate and humane image by removing treats and food made in China, showing you care about providing safe products for our pets. Your sale of birds contradicts this positive image, but you can change that by discontinuing the sale of birds.
Thank you for caring.

Cats are domesticated animals and should not be allowed to roam freely outside. Cats decimate native wildlife. Let's find a way to help all animals, not favoring one over many.
No. Don’t say it. Don’t say, “I want one.”

Let’s think about it.

You want them to be happy, right? Of course you do. You’re a nice person.

For them to be at their happiest, you’ll need to leave them in their native habitat and protect said habitat through your support of conservation efforts.

Buying one from a breeder isn’t any better.

They live up to 80 years.

Are not domesticated, they are wild animals - Loud, messy, and can take a chunk out of your flesh at any time

Develop psychological issues causing them to pluck and self mutilate in captivity

It’s cruel to take them from their loving parents

They’ll be happier flying in the skies than locked up in a cage.

Like you may have learned by watching Blackfish, if you really love animals, it’s best to let wild animals be wild.
I love birds beyond anything else in this world and want their best interests met. I know there’s some great bird owners… I know even more cruel ones.

I’ve been rescuing birds for over 5 years, and it’s one nightmare story after the next. Just the other day we had ANOTHER set of budgies left in the Florida sun with no water, NEXT TO THE TRASH… We had a pair of lovies like that, and a pair of budgies 2 years ago….
No bird should ever suffer like that.

Birds are given to anyone… They’re given to people with good intentions, then life changes, then the bird is dumped. They’re starved to death because Little Billy was put in charge of feedings and simply stopped (this story was told to me by 2 different people and they didn’t bat an eye). Birds are released (illegal and likely will result in death), locked in closets because noise, screamed at. One was hit (an ekkie), thrown against the wall because it bit a guys girlfriend, resulting in a broken beak…

No animal deserves this. Humans, as a whole, do not take care of pets… many can’t even take care of themselves. Honestly? I feel birds shouldn’t even BE pets. They are in fact, wild animals.

My wish is that we, as responsible, loving, bird lovers do the best we can with the birds already in our care, and we stop breeding them for our selfish wants. Breeding for conservation is fine, that’s a just purpose, but for our homes? For profit? No.

Imagine having the ability to FLY and are confined to a life inside a cage? Many parrots become emotionally unstable, depressed, and even pluck and self mutilate. Cockatoos suffer this the most, and they live to be 80 years old!

Another reason birds belong in the wild… Birds live with decent owner for 30 years. That owner dies, that bird stops eating, and dies. That bird viewed that owner as a mate, because that’s what birds do.

Long story short, and I’m open to hear the thoughts of others as long as you don’t flame me, adopt only, support conservation efforts of birds in their native habitats, support sanctuaries, visit sanctuaries, enrich the birds already in our care to the best of our ability, and don’t turn to breeders.

Breeders take babies from their loving parents, having raised a family of birds, I could never do that to any animal. That’s too devastating…

I hope that clears some things up. I love birds so much, I would dream of a future where they are not in our homes, but where they belong, in the skies.

Instead of spending 2000$ on food, vetting, cage, an actual cockatoo, I could take that money and go to Australia and see them enjoy freedom.

"It shouldn't matter where pet birds come from, it matters where they're going."

How about no?

When it comes to puppy mills, wouldn't you say it should matter where the animal comes from?

Why is it any different for a bird?

Do you believe in, "Adopt don't shop?"

By purchasing a bird (or any animal), you're creating demand.

Young birds sell because they're extra cute and needy of parents, which to deprive them of their family is cruel within itself.

Elly was needy, clingy, and cute. I was sold. Then she hit puberty. If my dad is home, she will attack me, and want to be with him.

It's a terrible cycle that is perpetuated when anyone buys an animal.

You are creating a demand, and breeders fill that demand in cruel ways.

I got Elly from Petco, she was my first parrot, I was unaware of the Bird Mill she came from and I vowed to never support that industry ever again. I also vowed to spread awareness as to prevent the demand for bred wild animals, aka parrots. (They are not domesticated, their parents or grandparents were plucked from the wilds).

Have you seen birds bond with their babies? I have. I will tell you straight up, they should never be taken away from them. To do so is inhumane.

You know how birds bond.

If you wouldn't take a human baby from their mother, you shouldn't encourage people to take a bird baby from their mother. Anyone who has lived with a bird knows how like humans they are.

I was going to let this go, and I know no one is perfect, but yes, it DOES matter where they come from.

Over the weekend, Heaven has a new angel. We were hoping there was more we could do. Severe skeletal deformaties and an old fracture that left her leg bent back in an awkward position. Jade received cuddles and preens for some time before she was gently put to rest in my hands. I was able to give her scritches as we told her goodbye. I wanted to rehab her and find her a good home but it would have been unfair to her.

Rainforest Clinic added flowers to her coffin and she was buried at my home. Thank you for Bird Lovers Club, Sawgrass Nature Center, and Lori (the finder of Jade/Lucky) for trying their best to do right by this little friend.Birdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09845947581600211465noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5042255470586900488.post-26401603247179476092015-06-05T08:24:00.002-07:002015-06-05T08:40:04.881-07:00Guardian of Fukushima Mr. MatstumuraNaoto Matsumura has dedicated his life to the animals of Fukushima. He lives alone in his town deserted after the 2011 earthquake sent residents fleeing a nuclear power plant meltdown. He is only able to feed and care for the animals who were abandoned and left behind with money donated by supporters. He is still going strong 4 years later but needs donations and support to continue his wonderful mission. Plumfund will donate all profits back to Mr. Matsumura's work. Thank you for supporting this animal hero!

For many people the bird is a symbol of a higher freedom we long for. We dream of being like a bird, to ‘soar like an eagle’, 'be free as a bird’ and have 'wings like a dove’. We have a wishful envy of the bird’s ability to seemingly fly away from everyday troubles.

Our societal acceptance of keeping birds in cages as pets provides another clear example of generational thinking. Rather than acknowledging the obvious cruelty of keeping a living being destined to fly free in the sky confined in a cage, we have been conditioned to think that this practice is acceptable.

We convince ourselves that the bird doesn’t suffer as it knows no other life and was bred in captivity, yet we know that behaviours inherent to each species cannot be 'bred out’, and that their ability to undertake them provides quality of life. For our own kind, being caged equates to imprisonment — it is no different for any other species that shares this world with us.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, there are more birds kept as companions in Australia than all dogs and cats put together.

It was in ancient Egypt that bird were first caged and prized for their beauty<sup style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">1. The motivation for caging birds has not changed throughout the centuries — it is about what they contribute to our lives — and their innate needs are forgotten and denied them.

Caged birds often exhibit destructive abnormal behaviours directly related to mental suffering such as feather plucking, excessive vocalization, fear and aggression.<sup style="-webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; font-family: inherit; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; line-height: inherit; margin: 0px; outline: none 0px; padding: 0px;">2 This is not surprising when natural behaviours such as flying, choosing a mate, belonging to a flock, building nests and dust bathing are denied to them.

The relationships that we are able to have with dogs and cats are ones where there are clear mutual benefits — as the presence of both parties can enrich the lives of each other. The keeping of birds in cages as companions bears no resemblance to these relationships.

If we open our eyes and minds to a caged bird’s existence as it awaits sale in a pet shop — and disregard what we have been conditioned to accept and see — we cannot help but acknowledge the tragedy, that this living being which nature intended to soar free in the sky, will never feel the wind beneath its wings.
Call 954-538-3644 to report suspicious activity or vendors.

South Florida bird advocates are seeking the public’s assistance in protecting vulnerable hatchlings from being snatched from nests and sold as pets.

Shawn Denton, director of public services in Pembroke Pines, says he’s seen about 20 palm trees in his town with gouge patterns. He suspects the gouges are from spiked footwear worn by human poachers as they shimmy up the trunks on the prowl for baby birds. It’s something he wants to prevent — especially during spring, when baby birds are hatching.

"We don’t want to disrupt the natural family life of the nesting birds," Denton says. "We don’t want see additional birds and juveniles going into the sales stream in the pet [market]."

That’s where he’d like to partner with the public. Many of the gouge-marked palm trees are in medians along busy roads. Usually, he says, legitimate landscaping projects involve workers in trucks with lift mechanisms. People climbing trees with ladders or belts harnessed to the trunk would be suspicious, he says. He asks that anyone who sees this type of activity report it by calling 954-538-3644. He adds that suspicious vendors or roadside bird sellers should also be reported. via [x]Birdyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09845947581600211465noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5042255470586900488.post-60086858032540400592015-01-21T09:47:00.001-08:002015-01-21T09:58:16.722-08:00EXPERTS WHO CONDEMN OUTDOOR CATS

The American Bird Conservancy is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of native birds throughout the America’s.
On the subject of (indoor/)outdoor cats ABC is strongly in support of indoor cats, for the well being of the cat but especially for the well being of the native birds they’ve dedicated themselves to protecting.

Clint and Irene Davy are wildlife rehabilitators with over 25 years worth of experience. They operate the Gibsons Wildlife Rehab Center on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, Canada.

On the subject of (indoor/)outdoor cats the Davy’s ask that cat owners keep their cats indoors not only for the cat but due to the extensive amount of wildlife brought to their center as the result of domestic cat attacks.
Eric Barchas is a veterinarian in the San Francisco Bay Area and currently writes for the Ask A Vetcolumn on the website Catster. He’s also studied lion in Botwana and salmon in southern Chile, which isn’t relevant but is still pretty cool.

On the subject of (indoor/)outdoor cats Barchas believes letting a cat outdoors is absolutely not acceptable ever unless there is literally no other option than to put the cat down.
